The UK's biking community headed to the Excel centre at the weekend for the annual Motorcycle Show.

Latest models from the likes of Ducati, Harley Davidson and BMW were on parade as well as a range of motorcycle accessories, while a dramatic stunt show also took place.

Top racers such as Chris Walker, as well as television bike enthusiast Charlie Boorman, were also at the event which ran from Wednesday to Sunday and attracted more than 35,000 visitors.

A serious side of the show featured a Transport for London stand, which, along with representatives from the Mayor's Office and the Metropolitan Police Service, was pushing a safer road use initiative.

The group has formed the Motorcycle Tasking Team which runs training sessions known as Bikesafe London.

The one-day courses are aimed at improving motorcyclists' skills and experience, while helping them reduce insurance costs.

Mayor Boris Johnson's transport advisor Kulveer Ranger, who was at the Excel centre last Thursday, said: "Riding a motorbike is safer now than it was a decade ago, with the number of motorcyclists killed or seriously injured in the capital falling by about a fifth.

"However, although just one per cent of all journeys in the capital are made by motorbike or scooter, they still account for 21 per cent of all deaths and serious injuries.

"That's why we have set up this dedicated team of motorcycle safety experts to teach the Bikesafe London course."

The Motorcycle Tasking Team includes 12 full-time police officers who, as well as running safety courses, carry out on-street enforcement with the aim of making sure London's motorcycles are roadworthy and legal.
