Defeat returned to The Valley in a disappointing evening for Charlton on Tuesday as they were beaten by a goal in each half by relegation threatened Brighton.

It was frustrating evening for Charlton who, after a nervy start, began to impose themselves on the game only to be hit by a counter-attack goal from Inigo Calderon.

As the home side pushed forward for a second half equaliser Brighton killed off the game with a goal from Elliott Bennett, before Akpo Sodje pulled one back for Charlton.

Brighton started the strongest and after two minutes had their first effort, when Kazenga LuaLua cut inside of Frazer Richardson but shot just wide of Rob Elliot's goal.

It took Charlton 14 minutes to get their first shot on goal. Burton turned and shot from the edge of the area but Brighton keeper Peter Brezovan pushed it wide.

The games was tight, but the match turned on a Charlton miss.

Therry Racon had the ball with the keeper out of goal but his shot was weak and Brighton defenders blocked it on the line. From that counter attack, the away side took the lead.

Brighton countered and it culminated in Inigo Calderon bringing the carrying the ball deep into the Charlon half before unleashing a 20 yards past Elliot.

Further bad news hit Charlton when leading scorer Deon Burton was taken off with a groin injury before the break.

The second half started with Charlton on top. David Mooney picked up the ball from an angle after good work from Kyel Reid but fired over.

Just after the hour a long ball from Miguel Llera was brought down by Akpo Sodge but his shot inside the box was wide of the post.

Soon after an Akpo header across goal was brought down by Mooney but the Irishman shot over as he fell.

Brighton looked happy to defend the one goal lead but hit Charlton with a suckerpunch on 79 minutes.

It was Bennett who scored, firing in from 25 yards into the bottom corner of Elliot's net.

There was just time for a Charlton consolation deep in injury time when Akpo volleyed home after the keeper had missed a throughball.

But ultimately it was another poor result for the Addicks who are now in danger of dropping out of the hunt for automatic promotion.

Charlton: Elliot, Richardson (McKenzie 70), Jackson (S Sodje 75), Llera, Dailly; Sam, Bailey, Racon, Reid; Mooney, Burton (A Sodje 31).

Brighton: Brezovan; Calderon, Painter, Elphick, El-Abd; Bennett, Crofts, Dicker, Navarro, LuaLua (Hart 71); Forster (Holroyd 57).

Must have been at a different game than me then.

Brighton were much the better team throughout, dealing with the conditions much better and frankly superior in a tactical sense.
