Award for law student who worked through violence

Tara Webb has emerged from the shadow of domestic violence by pressing on with a law degree.

The University of Greenwich student had to leave home in the middle of her A-levels aged 17, but has won two gongs at the XCel Student of the Year awards.

Tara, 20, said: "We moved a number of times to get away from one of my mum's partners. He tried to kill her with a knife. This happened more than once.

"I was living in emergency, then temporary, accommodation when I was doing my A-levels. Students at Greenwich are more determined than those elsewhere. There are no silver spoons here - we're prepared to work that bit harder."

Tara has now set up Friends With Time, an email service for students and staff at Greenwich who have problems with domestic violence or forced marriages.

The final-year student was presented with the Student of the Year and Law Student of the Year awards at the event, sponsored by law firm CMS Cameron McKenna.
