IN A NUTSHELL
Dear Family Guy. Movie references are not substitutes for jokes, even if there's one every two seconds. Stop it. Now.
REVIEW
Film references are great, aren't they?
Do you remember Superhero Movie? Not Another Teen Movie? Disaster Movie? Weren't they hilarious? That bit when Captain Jack Sparrow turned up in the locker room? Comedy gold. You can't get that in a stand-up show.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to splice all of my DVD collection together randomly with selotape and laugh until I pass out.
If you found yourself agreeing with me just then, you probably accidentally sat on your brain on the school bus. You'll also probably wet yourself at Something Something Something Dark Side, the second in Family Guy's limp re-treads of the Star Wars saga.
There's a third one in the works as well, but no one's come up with a joke yet.
Basically, this 60 minute slop is a faithful re-telling of The Empire Strikes Back, peopled by Family Guy characters. At one stage, Chris Griffin (playing Luke Skywalker) apes a scene from the movie, and then randomly switches to a scene from Back To The Future 2. Crazy, huh? I nearly chuckled my spleen loose.
There's also the obligatory musical number, which has been a boil on the face of the series for years now. If this special were any lazier, it would have to be winched to the bathroom.
