Protest group in legal boost against airport expansion

Campaigners against the expansion of London City Airport are celebrating after receiving permission for a full hearing before the High Court.
Last year, protest group Fight The Flights launched a legal challenge against Newham Council's decision to raise the cap on flights at the airport from 80,000 to 120,000 a year.
The group claimed the council failed to consult residents or neighbouring authorities on the application and went against Government policy on climate change and aviation by approving the plans.
Chair of Fight The Flights Anne-Marie Griffin said: "This is another victory and a positive step towards justice for the residents of East London, many of whom were simply not consulted.
"Residents who have to put up with increased noise and air pollution as a result of Newham Council's decision to carry on expanding London City Airport will celebrate this news."
Newham Council refused to comment on the news. A spokeswoman for the council said: "Because it's still before the courts, it's inappropriate to say anything."
