It was a challenge that decided a game, but not everyone noticed it when it happened.

In the 57th minute, the ball was lurking around in Millwall's half when referee Andy Haines awarded a spot-kick to the Lions, much to the surprise of Oldham's players.

His assistant David Storrie had spotted a push by Sean Gregan on Millwall's Steve Morison, allowing Neil Harris to seal a 1-0 win from the spot.

Oldham manager Dave Penney described it as a "stupid penalty", while Millwall's Kenny Jackett mused that "we've had so many penalty decisions go against us that I felt we were due one".

It was a controversial way to seal Millwall's second away win of the season, but a victory counts for three points whether it's sealed with old fashioned graft or a wild deflection off a crash-landed lunar module.

The Lions played a side that were determined to edge out of the drop zone, and watched as both Dean Furman and Keigan Parker shot wide in the first ten minutes, and Pawel Abbott screwed a great chance wide on the half hour mark after Paul Robinson's slip.

In the second half, Jimmy Abdou's shot whisked a low shot just shy of the post, but it was Neil Harris' cool spot-kick to the bottom left corner that broke the deadlock. Immediately afterwards, Lewis Grabban could have doubled the lead after Morison struck the post, but his shot on the rebound was saved by Dean Brill.

The victory was only the second away win from 13 games for Millwall, but they're much stronger at home, with eight wins from 13 this season. Southend will visit the Den on Tuesday.
