Maritime museum shows Villiers photos
The National Maritime Museum is running an exhibition of the photographs of Alan Villiers.
The Australian, born in 1903, captured the dying days of the Tall Ships in the 1920s and 30s.
Villiers first went to sea at the age of 15 on the Rosthesay Bay which operated between Australia and New Zealand.
Unable to work because of an injury, he turned his attentions to journalism taking little time to pursue his new trade afloat.
The museum, where he became a trustee, has 20,000 of his negatives and a handful are on show alongside his evocative descriptions.
The Last Of The Tall Ships runs to April 6.
