Derby County 1 Millwall 1 (aet) (5-4 on penalties)

MillwallLOGO142.jpgIt was penalty heartbreak for Millwall as they lost in a shoot-out lottery to Derby County in last night's FA Cup third round replay.

Danny Schofield was the Lions' fall-guy as he saw his spot-kick saved by Rams keeper Stephen Bywater to send the home side through.

It was rough justice on the League One side who had the better of the match against their Championship opponents, in front of a sparse crowd at Pride Park.

Derby were ripe for the taking after losing three home matches on the trot and it was Millwall who made the early inroads, with Steve Morison wasting a decent scoring chance.

Derby had their own chances with Stephen Pearson twice going close but Millwall always looked dangerous, particularly from set-pieces.

Derby's best moment came when Chris Porter sidefooted a Pearson cross goalward, only for his effort to bounce off the bar to safety.

But neither side could break the deadlock over 90 minutes and extra time duly came, and the game sprang into life.

Scott Barron hit a fizzing shot against the post, just moments after Morison saw his header saved by Bywater.

And it was Morison, who has been in fine form recently, who opened the scoring on 108 minutes, prodding the ball home from close range after seeing his header bounce back off the bar.

Derby, urged on by an animated Nigel Clough, responded and levelled the tie on 114 minutes when Steve Davies raced onto a through ball and chipped the ball over David Forde.

Neither side could add to their goal tally and penalties beckoned.

Schofield, a second half substitute for the Lions, took his side's second spot kick, only to see it beaten away by Bywater. Derby converted all their efforts to take the game, much to Clough's relief.

Millwall boss Kenny Jackett was phlegmatic about the defeat, looking at the positives from his side's performance.

He said: "It's disappointing because we scored the first goal, which is always going to be vital.

"It's frustrating not to hang on but it was a good performance and there were a number of positive things to take out of it.

"I can't criticise Danny Schofield, it was a well struck penalty but Bywater has read it and made a good save.

"The FA Cup is over, but we have to get on with our league campaign now. We will do everything we can to get in the top six and there can be no hangover from this."
