Cafe gets licence despite airport boss concern

A brasserie on the Isle of Dogs has been successful in its bid for a license, despite complaints from neighbours such as airport boss Richard Gooding.

Cafe Sen on Crews Street was granted permission for pre-recorded music and late-night refreshment on Thursday night (January 14).

Tower Hamlets Council's licensing sub-committee green-lit Joanne and Siu Chi Trinh's request for hours running from 11am to 3pm and 5pm to midnight from Monday to Thursday, with an extension to 12.30am on Friday and Saturday.

The operators have pledged to provide "effective and responsible management" of the premises. However, the application was contested by some nearby homeowners, who feared parking problems in the residential area, as well as possible disturbance from evening drinkers.

London City Airport chief executive Richard Gooding, who lives nearby with his wife Charmaine, objected "on grounds of noise and surface access, especially parking".

In an email to acting licensing services manager Jackie Randall sent in November, they said: "This is private land and parking is expressly forbidden. What actions are the licensees proposing to prevent, deter and respond to licensing issues? Also, what security arrangements will apply, as this is a quiet residential area."

Another neighbour, Ronny Lespoix, worried that "intoxicated guests will make noise, behave disorderly and might even vomit on the premises". He also cites concerns over parking and music noise.

The applicants have assured Tower Hamlets Council that doors and windows will be kept closed to prevent undue disturbance, and that "staff shall ensure that customers are verbally requested not to cause disturbance on leaving the premises".

In response, the committee applied conditions, including a ban on outdoor dining. Signage is to be required reminding patrons to leave quietly, while cigarette bins are to be installed outside and phone numbers for local taxi firms are to be made available for patrons.

Thats a very interesting comment from the MD of City Airport. Maybe he should move to Silvertown then he can hear some noise. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Richard Gooding should at least hang his head in shame and at most resign for his double standards to noise and parking disruption. I hope London City Airport lose the Judaical Review being brought by the residents group against LB Newhams 50% expansion approval of the airport.

Now hang on. There's a bit difference between noisy late night revellers and an airport that closes at night. I agree with Mr Gooding and his neighbours. This new cafe will pollute a quiet residential area and should never have been given permission.

London City Airport's hours are from 6.30am to 10.30pm during the week. People who live beside and in the flight paths of this Airport are woken early and usually have to wait until the last flight before they can get a good nights sleep.
