The Boat Show kicks off this week with a series of dramatic demonstrations from the Royal Engineers.

It is first time the group, one of the corps of the British Army, has appeared at the 56-year-old event. It will put on displays of its military craft three times a day.

The boat show, sponsored by broker Tullett Prebon, begins tomorrow at the Excel centre and will run for 10 days, up until January 17.

National Boat Shows' managing director Andrew Williams said: "The Corps' military expertise is sure to inspire our visitors. We are expecting a highly charged atmosphere out on the marina during the demonstrations."

The Royal Engineers is a force which supports the British Armed Forces in war, while in peacetime its sappers help civilian populations in recover from both conflict and natural disasters.

It will bring a Combat Support Boat and a Rigid Raider to the Royal Victoria Docks for the annual event.

Meanwhile, inside the Excel there will be hundreds of boats on show with prices ranging from £500 to £10million.

There will also be a dance fashion performance called Rock The Boat and inspiring stories from boating heroes

An indoor pool will allow for interactive games and there will also be a boat building section.
