The Who - Greatest Hits
Geffen, £15
3/5
Do we really need another Greatest Hits of The Who? Only if we don't already own one.
There's no time like Christmas for releasing the Greatest Hits album and this offering from The Who might make a great emergency gift for Dad.
Touted as the band's "largest single disc best of", it is also a conveniently packaged introduction with which a Who virgin might be enlightened.
This is the first compilation to encompass their entire 42-year recording career but, aside from that, there isn't too much to encourage a die hard fan to pick it up off the shelf.
The Who - Greatest Hits is a slightly re-jigged version of 2004's Then And Now collection.
There's not a whole lot more on this latest package that you won't have if you own The Ultimate Collection or The Best Of The Who.
The album features all the usual suspects including My Generation, Pinball Wizard and I Can See For Miles.
Chronologically arranged it ends with 2006 comeback track It's Not Enough, not released in the UK. The song didn't chart in the US begging the question, how did it make it onto this particular compilation.
That said, standing alone this is a great album of truly superb music. With the hideous current climate of soulless X-factor starlets and cardboard cut-out pop stars assaulting the album charts it would be good to see it make a dent.
