Steeds' boxing career at crossroads after defeat

51Jun19steeds.jpgMicky Steeds needs to "knuckle down and get serious" about his boxing career if he's to make a lasting impression on the cruiserweight division.

That's the view of his manager Mark Roe after the Isle of Dogs boxer lost a close contest against Terry Dunstan at York Hall last Friday.

Steeds has lost his last four fights and Roe is adamant the 26-year-old has to decide if he wants to win titles.

He said: "Micky's had a little bit of a rough patch this year and he's got to knuckle down now and get serious. He has to realise he's fighting at a higher level than he has been used to and he's got to prepare himself better. He could have been a little bit fitter for this fight and he knows it.

"This year has been disappointing on the whole, but the important thing is he learns from these defeats because that's how he will improve."

Roe was puzzled as to why the referee gave the fight to veteran journeyman Dunstan, who edged the contest by just two points over six rounds.

He said: "It should really have been a draw. Micky knocked him down in the first round and definitely won the last round, so to give it to Dunstan was a bit strange. We feel a bit hard done by and Micky was a bit dejected afterwards because of the way it was scored.

"I'm hoping we can get a rematch because it was pretty close and if we do, I'll ask for it to be for the English title over 10 rounds, which will be better for Micky.

"But whatever happens Micky should be back in the ring at the end of February, and hopefully 2010 will be a lot better than 2009."
