Marsh Wall hotel refused by council

Plans for a 305-bedroom hotel in Marsh Wall have failed to impress Tower Hamlets Council.

The authority's Strategic Development Committee refused to grant planning permission for the 39-storey tower at 40 Marsh Wall this week, citing concerns over its size.

Applicant Marsh Wall Chelsea LLP hoped to create a "boutique" hotel just across the dock from the Canary Wharf estate, opposite the long-standing Britannia International Hotel.

The scheme included the demolition of a five-storey building housing businesses such employment agency Office Angels, and its replacement with a 127.15metre AOD building featuring office space, conference facilities, restaurants and cafes.

However, committee members were not impressed by the bid as a whole, and dismissed the application on Tuesday night (December 15).

A council spokeswoman said: "The planning application for 40 Marsh Wall was refused at Tuesday night's Strategic Development Committee due to concerns over the height, bulk and mass of the proposed development.

"There were also concerns over a lack of coach parking and inappropriate Section 106 contributions to highways."

The developer had pledged a total Section 106 payment of £1,140,518, including £859,300 for transport and highway improvements and £204,558 for employment and training.
