James Tomkins confident of West Ham revival
James Tomkins insists West Ham are not worrying about relegation despite their 4-0 drubbing by Manchester United at the weekend.
The England under-21 centre-back returned to the Irons' starting line-up against the Premier League champions but could do little to stop Wayne Rooney and co running riot in the second half.
Despite the defeat Tomkins is upbeat about the Hammers' prospects.
He said: "I don't think there's too much to worry about. We're a good team and we've got plenty of good players here and good characters to get us out of the trouble we're in.
"It's not as if we're not playing too well. We're letting in a lot of goals, which we're trying to work on. The main thing is to look forward to the next game and keep working hard in training."
That next game is against Birmingham at St Andrews this Saturday and West Ham desperately need a win to move up the table. But they might still be without skipper Matthew Upson against his former club, which means Tomkins is again likely to partner Danny Gabbidon at centre-back.
He said: "Everyone's disappointed after Saturday but we've got a big game next week away to Birmingham and it's something we need to pick ourselves up for quickly, to bounce back, and we'll be working hard in training."
"I don't know whether Matty will be training this week but he's a good leader. Whoever we get back we'll be positive. It's a big game, playing Birmingham, but we're going to go up there full of confidence and hopefully get the three points."
Tomkins, 20, admitted the Irons are having problems scoring goals, while conceding them is even more of an issue.
He said: "Sometimes it's hard. They get one chance and they score. It takes us a few maybe to score. But defensively it's little things that are costing us goals and we're not getting the rub of the green as well. I think it's a number of things."
