A time for celebration and family

Christmas is an important time for celebrating with family, friends and colleagues.

But it is also a time when we remember those less fortunate than ourselves and those who are no longer with us. It's been poignant, therefore, that this week I have attended the unveiling of two new plaques.

The first is at the new South Quay DLR station and remembers the two lives lost and those injured when the IRA bomb exploded there in 1996.

The second memorial is to the five firemen and one civilian who died in 1969 at Dudgeons Wharf when a tank exploded following a fire.

It is right that these people are remembered and I would like to thank all those who have battled bureaucracy in order to get these plaques put up.

At this time of year, it is one of my greatest pleasures, as a trustee of the Isle of Dogs Community foundation (IDCF), to hand out Christmas hampers to the elderly in my ward.

These gratefully received food parcels are kindly donated by companies based at the Wharf and distributed by an army of volunteers.

It's a rare pleasure in this fast-paced environment that we live and work in, to be able to put a smile on someone's face.

I wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
