Torrance: Europe can win the Ryder Cup
Golfer Sam Torrance was getting into the swing of things when he dropped into the area this week.
The former Ryder Cup winning captain was at top clothes designer Tony Q'aja's Docklands base getting kitted out for next season, and he thinks British golf is in pretty good shape.
Torrance, 56, winner of the Senior Order of Merit this year, thinks that's good news for Europe captain Colin Montgomerie with the Ryder Cup on next year's calendar.
He also thinks the Americans won't fancy the conditions at Celtic Manor next October.
He said: "Everything's in our favour. It's a couple of weeks later because of the FedEx Cup so the weather is not going to help at all, you'll get more of that Welsh horizontal rain.
"It takes a lot of desire to get out of bed and play in that, although with the Ryder Cup you don't need much desire, but I think it'll favour the Europeans. They're looking strong.
"It's great to see Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter in form while Rory McIlroy has almost cemented his place already. That's great for a captain that his good players are playing well early on as it alleviates the problems of the picks when that time comes around."
Captaining the European team in 2002 remains Torrance's career pinnacle "by a mile" but he won't be taking on the role again.
He said: "The most important criteria is that you're the right man for the job and I won't be that man. I've not been on tour with them for six years, and that's critical really because you've got to create a bond with a few nods and winks over the year.
"Monty's played eight Ryder Cups so he knows exactly what to do and he'll relish it."
Britain is long overdue a Major winner, the last being Paul Lawrie at The Open in 1999, and Torrance feels the wait is set to end.
He said: "There's a number of them can do it, even young Chris Wood. He was a nine iron away on the last hole of the Open from winning it, but he made five and missed the play-off by a shot. There's plenty of them can do it and I think it will happen soon."
Torrance also had a word about to why he was at Tony Q'aja's Royal Docks studio.
He said: "After seeing Tony's made-to-measure golf shirts look good on Phil Mickleson I thought it might be good for me to try the service on my athletic figure. I already have my trousers made by him so I thought why not go for the whole co-ordinated look."
