O2124.jpgThe O2 has picked up another honour after being named as the top arena in the world at the Billboard Awards.

It's the first time The O2 has won the award, taking the accolade from Madison Square Garden which has it won for the last five years.

The awards honour the music industry's top artists and venues based on the Billboard Boxscores chart.

Last month The O2 was named the world's most popular arena by Pollstar after selling almost 1,600,000 tickets so far this year, despite the cancellation of Michael Jackson's residency following his tragic death.

David Campbell, chief executive and president of AEG Europe, dedicated the win to Jackson.

He said: "We are a bit biased but we think The O2 is a very special place. We particularly want to thank the 600 artists who have played since we opened just over two years ago.

"Although 2009 will be another world record breaking year at The O2 I would like to dedicate this award to "This Is It" and the many people who would have made the King of Pop's show the best live show ever. God bless you Michael."

There are still plenty of top acts lined up to play the venue this year, including Beyonce and Sir Paul McCartney.
