Southampton 2 Charlton 1
Charlton endured their second cup exit in three days when they crashed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy against Southampton.
Last night's 2-1 defeat at St Mary's Stadium follows Sunday's FA Cup first round humiliation at Northwich Victoria.
To cap it all Southampton's win gave former Addicks' boss Alan Pardew the satisfaction of putting one over his previous club.
The home side started the match well and dominated the first half. They earned their reward when Wayne Thomas put them ahead in the 34th minute.
The defender crashed the ball past Carl Ikeme from close range into the roof of the net for his first goal in almost four years.
Southampton continued to press in the second half, forcing one magnificent save from Ikeme.
But Saints doubled their advantage on 63 minutes when Richard Lambert cracked home a shot into the bottom corner from outside the box.
Charlton fought back with Deon Burton and Lloyd James both having efforts at goal but by the time Leon McKenzie found the back of the net for them in the last minute it was too little too late.
At least Charlton can now concentrate on their League One promotion battle with all their interest in cup competitions over for this season.
