A new domestic violence court has sentenced a man to twenty weeks in jail for beating his terminally ill girlfriend after an argument.

French national George Noel, 47, of East Ferry Road, confronted his partner after an argument and punched her in the face with such force that she was knocked backwards and hurt her back on the bath.

He continued to strike her in the face several times before locking her in the bathroom.

Police were called following the incident on June 16 this year, and arrested and charged him with assault on the woman, who does not wish to be identified.

Noel was handed the sentence on November 12 at the new Special Domestic Violence Court at Thames Magistrates Court. After being found guilty of assault, he was also given a restraining order prohibiting him from making any contact with the victim for life. It was Noel's first conviction.

DC Dan Stephens, from the Community Safety Unit at Limehouse Police Station who led the investigation, recommended that anyone suffering from domestic violence should contact police on 999, Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or the Tower Hamlets Domestic Violence Team on 0800 279 5434.

He said: "This was a nasty and prolonged attacked on a very vulnerable woman.

"The length of this sentence for a first offence shows how seriously the courts and the Police deal with domestic violence. This sentence combined with the life long restraining order should help to keep this woman safe. I would encourage any one suffering from domestic violence to call the police - We can help."
