Cameron launches Tickets for Troops at The O2

He might be the Prime Minister-in-waiting but political ambition has not stopped David Cameron coming up with an idea to make life a little better for soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Conservative Party leader was at The O2 yesterday to launch his Tickets for Troops initiative.

The scheme will see thousands of free tickets for sporting and entertainment events distributed to servicemen and women.

The independent, not for profit organisation is supported by a host of sports and entertainment organisations keen to give something back to the soldiers who have served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mr Cameron said: "This is a thank you to those who deserve our gratitude. We need to think about what we can do to recognise our servicemen for what they do for us. This will make a difference to thousands of people in this country."

Servicemen and women will be able to get tickets for football matches at the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, boxing organised by Frank Warren Promotions as well as concerts and shows at venues including Hammersmith Apollo and The O2.

Troops book online, quoting their MOD numbers, while the scheme is also open to veterans discharged with injury since the start of the Iraq war.

Although Mr Cameron's brainchild Tickets for Troops will be free of party politics and those using it will be asked to make a donation of £1 for their tickets, with all proceeds going to help run the charity.

Plenty of stars have added their support, including singer Katherine Jenkins, cricketer Sir Ian Botham and the cast of West End musical Sister Act.

aa-nov5-troops480.jpgHelping at the launch were footballer-turned-TV-pundit Gary Lineker, Victoria Cross winner Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry and singer Joss Stone.

Lineker said: "I spent a few days out in Afghanistan recently and it was a humbling experience. The heat was well into the 40s and you wouldn't believe the grit and dust.

"The troops all talk about coming home but the next thing they talk about is the football team they support or the concerts they want to go and see.

"This is a simple and terrific idea and it should be able to work. And if there are any clubs out there who have not got involved - shame on you."

Another very interesting initiative from Mr. Cameron. Our troops abroad certainly deserve a better deal than their getting at the moment. As much as I'd hate to admit it I may just vote conservative next time.
