Organisers expected about 1,500 job seekers throughout the day for the jobs fair at East Wintergarden on Tuesday.

But by the time the doors opened at 10am thousands had turned up and were queuing around the Canary Wharf estate to get in - providing a logistical nightmare.

Councillor Oliur Rahman, the lead member for employment and skills at Tower Hamlets Council, said: "I'm speechless. I didn't expect such a huge turnout, with the queue going all the way to Westferry Road.

"I believe there's about 10,000 people at the moment."

By midday many in the queue had been sent home after organisers Tower Hamlets Council took their details and promised to call them at a later date.

Employers such as Asda, the armed forces, London Fire Brigade and the Four Seasons hotel were recruiting at the day long event.
