Sir Steve creates a wave in the Wharf
Sir Steve Redgrave was back on familiar territory when he dropped into Canary Wharf this afternoon.
The five time Olympic rowing champion spent many hours training in the nearby Royal Docks in the early days of his career and even has a bridge named after him there.
And with preparations for the 2012 Olympics building pace he will be spending a lot more time in the area as he heads up a Government initiative to encourage more people to take up sport.
The Wharf sat down for an exclusive chat with the rowing legend and he was frank about his ambitions to put Britain at the top of the sporting tree.
Sir Steve hopes the staging of the Games will strengthen Britain's sporting tradition and continue winning plenty of Olympic medals.
He said: "If you look at the history of the Olympics the country staging them always produces its best ever results that year.
"That attainment is usually carried on for the next Olympics and then it tails off. What I want is for Britain to become the first country to carry on success for more than one Games after the one we've hosted."
Sir Steve was signing copies of his new book, Inspired, and head a steady stream of fans queueing to meet him.
To read a full, exclusive interview with Sir Steve pick up a copy of next week's Wharf, out on Thursday.
Inspired is published by Headline, priced £18.99.
