Millwall to contest FA charges
Millwall have declared their intention to contest the charges brought against them following the trouble at the West Ham Carling Cup game on August 25.
The Lions have been granted an extra seven days to finalise their defence to FA charges of failing to control their fans during the game at Upton Park.
On the evening Millwall fans ripped out seats and threw them at West Ham fans and allegedly directed racist taunts towards West Ham players. There was also a report of damage caused to a toilet at the ground.
West Ham were also charged with failing to control their supporters, who invaded the pitch three times, but Millwall's contention is that, as the away team, they were not in a position to police their fans.
There was also widespread trouble outside the ground, resulting in a Millwall fan being stabbed by West Ham troublemakers.
Millwall chief executive Andy Ambler said: "We will be pleading not guilty to all charges and defending our position vigorously.
"It is a frustration to us that we are committing significant resources of time, energy and money towards having to defend ourselves in the face of these charges.
"It is our contention that the charges are not justified and that the resources would have been more constructively deployed in supporting the ongoing work, particularly by our community scheme, in tackling some of the issues raised by the events of 25 August."
