Open House weekend celebrates British architecture
Fancy getting out of the house this weekend and taking a peek round someone else's pad?
Well, why not take advantage of the annual Open House weekend where hundreds of buildings across the capital throw open their doors for free in a celebration of the best of British architecture.
There are plenty of opportunities to explore nooks and crannies around Docklands not usually open to the public.
In Tower Hamlets the George Green Building, at 155 East India Dock Road, is now the Financial Services Skills Academy. The Grade II listed Victorian building has been beautifully restored.
The Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich is well worth a visit, particularly the spectacular painted hall dating from 1708-27.
Newham also has plenty of attractions, including the London Regatta Centre and the University of East London Docklands Campus, both situated in the Royal Docks.
Over in Rotherhithe the Lavender Pond Pumphouse will be open for tours of the of the building originally built to regulate water levels in the Surrey Commercial Docks.
Further afield there is a chance to explore buildings such as the BBC's Bush House in Aldwych and the Royal Albert Hall. Note that some visits do require pre-booking.
The London Open House weekend takes place on September 19-20. For full details visit openhouse.org.uk.
