An event designed to highlight the plight of the British pub has been cancelled.

Acts such as ABC, Go West and T'Pau were due to appear in Greenwich Park for the Pub In The Park event between September 18 and 20. But organisers have pulled the plug, blaming the recession and "slower than expected ticket sales".

A statement on the event website said: "It is with enormous regret that the organisers of Pub in the Park have been left with no option other than to announce that this year's Pub in the Park will not be going ahead.

"This is due to a combination of factors, including slower than expected ticket sales, and the pressures bought on by this uncertain economic climate.

"We would like to "Thank" all those who purchased tickets and assure you that you will all receive refunds. Please contact your point of purchase from Monday September 14, to receive your refund of your ticket price less booking and transaction fee. If you booked through See tickets your ticket monies will be automatically refunded.

"There are so many people who have provided enormous support to this event who we would like to thank in time personally for their drive, enthusiasm and support of this event, and to our very hard working and dedicated team you have been fantastic."

Organiser Sarah Traynor, chief executive of Custom Made Events, talked to The Wharf this week about her hopes for the festival, which was due to feature comedy, karaoke, music and pub games such as tiddlywinks and darts.

The website at pubinthepark.com has provided links to sellers to contact about refunds. For See Tickets, go to seetickets.com/pubinthepark or call 0871 230 5583. Other sites listed are viewlondon.co.uk/pub-in-the-park-tickets and wegottickets.com/about.

As a result of the announcement, The Wharf's ticket competition in this week's paper is also cancelled.
