westham.jpgWest Ham defender James Collins has swapped one claret and blue shirt for another after joining Aston Villa on a four year deal.

The Welsh defender passed a medical at Villa Park this afternoon and signed for the Villans for a fee believed to be around £5million.

James Collins125.jpgIt brings to an end a four year stay at Upton Park for the 26-year-old centre-half, during which time he played 64 times for the Hammers, scoring two goals.

He has been Matthew Upson's regular Premier League partner at centre-back this season, which makes his sale more puzzling, although the Irons will claim they have plenty of cover for the position with the likes of Danny Gabbidon and James Tomkins available.

Collins' departure is the second high-profile exit from Upton Park in 24 hours, with young forward Savio Nsereko joining Fiorentina yesterday.

With less than an hour left of the transfer window the Hammers are cutting it fine to bring in new recruits, with a forward still a top priority for Gianfranco Zola.
