Charlton win as Shelvey signs
Charlton stayed top of League One with a convincing 2-0 win over Brentford on Saturday and secured the future of their brightest young star as well.
Goals from Deon Burton and Lloyd Sam ensured the Addicks maintained their 100 per cent start in the league, while 17-year-old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey signed a contract extension.
Midfielder Shelvey has become an integral part of Phil Parkinson's side and the England under-17 international agreed a deal to keep him at The Valley until at least 2012.
It's good news for Charlton fans, who are enjoying life again after the traumas of last season's relegation.
The Addicks were always in control against Brentford and played some sublime football as they made it six wins out of six.
The biggest surprise was how they only managed to score two goals against last season's League Two champions.
Burton opened the scoring in the 11th minute after Sam capitalised on a weak header by Sam Wood to square the ball to the Jamaican international.
Burton kept his composure to slot home, via a deflection, past Lewis Price in the Brentford goal.
Brentford had a good shout for a penalty turned down after Nicky Bailey appeared to use his arm to knock the ball away from Danny Foster on the quarter hour but referee Linnington turned them down.
Charlton were producing some excellent passing moves, with Shelvey and Bailey linking up particularly well, and the home side doubled their lead on the half hour after a 15 pass move.
Sam was the man who latched onto the final through ball, taking it past the last defender and coolly finishing.
It looked as though Charlton would run riot but they could not add to their tally despite enjoying the bulk of possession for the rest of the match.
But Brentford still looked dangerous on the break and Carl Cort missed an excellent chance in the 39th minute.
The former Newcastle and Wolves front man contrived to head wide from just six yards out when it looked easier to score.
Had he knocked it in the balance of the game might have changed, giving the visitors more confidence to press for a goal.
But as it was Charlton maintained their grip on proceedings and continued to create the better opportunities.
Burton was guilty of missing a sitter early in the second half, when he screwed his shot wide from six yards after the outstanding Bailey set him up.
Shelvey tried a cheeky shot from all of 35 yards that sailed over while Sam and Burton also went close.
Brentford were not finished and almost scored when Cort forced a fabulous save from Rob Elliott in the 73rd minute when his powerful header looked destined for the bottom corner.
And six minutes later David Hunt rattled Elliott's crossbar with a ferocious free-kick, from all of 30 yards. The Charlton keeper was relieved to see the ball rebound to safety.
The hosts almost extended their lead a minute later when Izale McLeod, just on as a substitute for Shelvey, wriggled into the box only to see his shot from close range clawed away by Price.
Charlton continued to pass and move well, thanks in no small part to being able to name the same starting XI for the sixth successive league match. The understanding between the players is clearly good, while the winning streak has bred plenty of confidence.
So, Charlton stay top of League One and can look forward to this Saturday's visit of former manager Alan Pardew and his Southampton side with relish.
