Deon Burton scored his fourth goal of the season to deny Alan Pardew his first win of the season on his return to The Valley.

The former Charlton manager was greeted with a hostile reception from the home fans, but looked like having the last laugh when Southampton went in 1-0 up at the break.

Saints took the lead through an Adam Lallana goal two minutes before half-time, firing past Rob Elliot from a cross on the right.

The away player's celebration was Adebayor-esque as he ran in front of the North Stand to celebrate.

It was no less than Saints deserved, however, and they could have been further ahead if it was not for a superb reaction save from Elliot in the opening few minutes.

Charlton played well in patches but it was not until the second half that they showed the form which has put them top of League One.

Minutes into the second period, Elliot started a counter attack with an excellent throw releasing Jonjo Shelvey.

The 17-year-old's cross was fumbled by Kelvin Davis and Burton bundled the ball home.

The rest of the half saw Charlton's superior fitness levels come through and they twice had the ball in the back of the net only for the linesman's flag to intervene.

The second disallowed goal was harsh with Burton clearly onside before firing the ball past Davies.

Both sides then become embroiled in a brawl as the referee gradually lost control.

Charlton could not get the breakthrough and lost their 100 per cent record, while Pardew was left still looking for that first win of the season.
