A shirt-maker and new arrival to Canary Wharf is continuing to buck the trend in the recession.

Six weeks after opening a store at Canada Place Mall, Charles Tyrwhitt held a party in the Wharf on Tuesday where it reported solid sales performance for its initial trading period.

The company as a whole showed a 7.6 per cent like-for-like increase in sales in the 12 months up to February this year and that has continued at the store.

Manager Adam White said: "The opening was fantastic and we exceeded the week's target sales in the first day. It's found a level now but still racking up good sales."

Adam cites competitive pricing and good brand awareness for the strong performance.

He added: "We're selling an awful lot of white shirts and what we call English cut suits mainly in charcoal."

Charles Tyrwhitt, founded by Nick Wheeler, hopes to open another four stores in the UK over the next year.
