West Ham to meet Millwall in Carling Cup

westham.jpgIt will be tin hat time in east London in two weeks after two of football's bitterest foes were paired in the second round of the Carling Cup.

West Ham will face Millwall at the Boleyn Ground in what is undoubtedly the tie of the round.

Millwall convincingly beat Bournemouth 4-0 in Tuesday's first round tie but will face a much sterner test when they meet the Premier League side in a match to be played in the week of August 24.

ff-aug6-kennyjacketWEB142.jpgLions' boss Kenny Jackett was keen to play a team from the top division and will be pleased to have a lucrative trip to Upton Park to look forward to.

After the Bournemouth match he said: "We'll go as far as we can in the cup but realistically we want one of the big boys. That's the aim and ambition of all the clubs in the lower divisions."

His hopes were realised in last night's draw.

The two teams, whose supporters have a mutual antagonism, last met in April 2005 when they drew 1-1 in a Championship game.

Since then Millwall have slipped into League One while West Ham won promotion to the top flight and have gone on to consolidate themselves in the Premier League.

The sides have never met in the Carling Cup. The date and kick of time of the game have yet to be confirmed.

There will undoubtedly be a strong police presence on the night with fears that hooligan elements claiming to be attached to both clubs will use the fixture as an excuse for violence.
