The panic surrounding swine flu is beginning to subside, according to a Canary Wharf doctor.

Following the outbreak in early summer, the reported number of cases has dropped considerably.

Dr Wayne Cottrell, pictured, of the Sameday Doctor at West India Quay, said: "As far as we're concerned numbers have peaked.

"The figures released are vague as they only deal with confirmed cases but it does show the panic has subsided.

"With the Government putting measures in place, such as isolation and closing schools early, it's not spread as much as it could have."

The first confirmed case of the virus was on April 27. Since then the surgery has had a large number of calls about, but only two confirmed cases, of swine flu.

But Dr Cottrell added that people should still be cautious.

He said: "I want to be careful not to scare people but it is affecting a disproportionately high amount of healthy people compared to ordinary flu.

"Also there's still a lot that is not known about the virus and numbers could go up in the colder months."

The SameDay Doctor, a private healthcare facility, offers regular GP services, as well as STD testing and travel vaccinations.

For swine flu, it is following government guidelines and advising people not to come to the surgery.

Dr Cottrell said: "We've been carrying out telephone consultations.

"We gauge what the symptoms are and then we can treat the patient as if they have the virus."
