aa-jul30-popkin2.jpgA childhood brush with a football icon has inspired a part-time artist to stage a charity exhibition in Canary Wharf.

The artist, who goes by the name of Popkin, has 17 paintings on display at First Edition in Cabot Square, which he hopes will be sold to raise money for the Bobby Moore Fund for cancer research.

The 53-year-old, who lived on the Isle of Dogs for over 20 years, is a lifelong West Ham fan and had the pleasure of meeting his hero when he was 10-years-old.

He said: "I was born in east London and all my family were West Ham fans. I met Bobby just after West Ham - sorry England - won the World Cup in 1966.

"I was in his sports shop, which in those days was just across the road from the football ground, with my mum. She was buying me a kit and Bobby came in. Being the kind of guy he was he came over to say hello and ruffled my hair, which was quite something for me."

Popkin's main occupation is acting but he found the inspiration to produce his pop-art efforts after a friend suggested he dabble in painting again. The results were a series of pictures on a variety of subjects.

He said: "I've just followed my interests, really. There are some that are about gambling, a couple of others that are abstracts in the style of Miro and Rothko, and a few humorouos ones, plus a little bit of politics. Hopefully there will be something to appeal to everyone.

"I know that not everyone will like everything here. Everyone has their opinion, it's in the eye of the beholder, but I think I've got an eye for colour and an ear for humour. I'll let others make their minds up about my paintings."

Popkin's paintings are on display at the First Edition bar and gallery in Cabot Square for the next seven weeks.
