Charlton crashed out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night following defeat at League Two side Hereford United.

The hosts snatched victory in extra-time with a goal from Jonny Godsmark, on loan from Newcastle United. It came after Addicks' striker Andy Gray had a second half penalty saved.

Gray, linked to a move to Barnsley in the summer, also missed a header in normal time before Hereford scored the crucial goal.

He said: "Chances win matches and we didn't take our chances. Credit Hereford, they played well on the night and I wish them all the best in the next round."

The Addicks took a weakened squad to Hereford, with seven of the side that beat Wycombe rested.

The team had a makeshift look with Jose Semedo and Kelly Youga deputising at centre-back.

Meanwhile, youth product Alex Stavrinou was giving his first game for the club and fellow youngsters Scott Wagstaff and Chris Solly also started.

Parkinson said: "The plus point of the night was the youngsters getting first-team football under their belts.

"Alex Stavrinou came in for his debut and I thought it was an absolutely terrific performance.

"He, Chris Solly and Scott Wagstaff all played, and it was good for those boys. They came up against a decent team tonight.

"It was good to get a good chance to look at some of the youngsters after the injuries we picked up at the weekend."
