Vandalism brought DLR services to a halt at rush-hour on Monday evening.

A fence panel was thrown on to the track near Canning Town station at about 6pm, causing the power to be turned off and leaving some commuters trapped for nearly two hours.

About 150 passengers were on stuck on the trains during the chaos.

A Spokeswoman for Serco, which runs the trains, said: "The power had to be removed from the tracks at around 6.00pm in order for works to be undertaken, meaning four trains were halted between Canning Town and West Silvertown stations."

Those on one train were escorted to Pontoon Dock DLR.

Staff were brought in to assist commuters on other trains and provide water.

Ambulances were called but no injuries were reported. Services finally resumed at 7.45pm.

The incident is being investigated by British Transport Police.

DLR is offering passengers caught in the delay a refund on tickets through dlr.co.uk.

It is advising those who missed flights to London City Airport to write to the DLR customer service address.

Given that these DLR trains are all automated. How on earth did the train stop?
