Fading southern belle Blanche DuBois - played by Rachel Weisz - unexpectedly appears at her sister's home in the stifling world of downtown New Orleans.

With delusions of grandeur, Blanche stands in stark contrast to her new surroundings and her brother-in-law Stanley. His determination to reveal her secrets leads her to withdraw ever further away from reality, into a world of illusions.

A Streetcar Named Desire defined Tennessee Williams' reputation as one of the greatest American playwrights, winning him a Pulitzer Prize.

The cast includes Jack Ashton, Elliott Cowan and Daniela Nardini.

The production opens in preview next week. Go to donmarwarehouse.com.

Romanian actress Anamaria Marinca, pictured, performs Sarah Kane's lyrical exploration of emotional breakdown, directed by French director Christian Benedetti.

The director was the first to stage the piece in 2001 but this new production has been created specifically for the Young Vic.

Kane's fifth and last play (she died in 1999) is set in the no man's land between reality and imagination and this interpretation examines the themes of the human capacity to love and the profound quest for human connection.

The production runs until August 8. Go to youngvic.org.
