Mixed results for West India Quay Festival

The West India Quay festival has finished after four weeks of bands, art, tennis and even a visit from 'the Queen'.

But after the dust settled was the Big British Splash, an event targeted at rejuvenating the area, a success?

For some, such as Wetherspoons' The Ledger Building, it has been a good month.

Manager John Wall said: "General sales are up on last year. We've drawn people in from further afield and from the businesses over the bridge.

"We've certainly profited from the Big British Splash but now it's up to all of us to keep on promoting the area through the months ahead."

Other bars and restaurants said that while the initiative was a good idea it failed to noticeably boost trade. Manager at Bar 38 Daniel Janczarek said: "It didn't help as much as expected - mainly because of the weather.

"We were counting on the music week as a big one but that was the worst week weather-wise. We've seen positive things from the festival but it's the sun which makes the difference."

Supervisor at 1802 Ana Jurisic said: "We expected it to be a bit busier on the weekends but with the Jubilee line closure that didn't help us."

Ana Azevedo, general manager of Brown's restaurant, said she had seen a slight increase in trade.

"The weeks of the festival were busy. It was good for us, especially the art week when the sun was out.

"The more we do things like this the better it is. West India Quay is a beautiful place and we should do more to promote it."

The Gentry West India Quay ran a successful fashion show despite being hampered by the weather.

Partner Keely Klein says there should now be more events throughout the year.

"It was brilliant apart from the weather," she said. "When the sun was out, so were the people.

"But we can't just do a one-off, it has to be regular events, and we also need a permanent sign bringing people to us."

The first week was seen as the most successful, with visitors boosted by a free opening of the Museum of London Docklands -which will be repeated in the first weekend in August.
