Families were evacuated from their homes on the Isle of Dogs on Thursday afternoon following reports of a "strong smell of chemicals".

Four fire engines and police cars arrived at the scene not long after midday. It is believed that police discovered the cause to be a cannabis factory on Alpha Grove.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "There was a smell of chemicals at the address. We attended and found what was believed to be a cannabis factory."

A number of homes on the street were evacuated by officers following their initial investigation.

They have now been allowed to return to their homes.

A spokeswoman for London Fire Brigade said: "At 12.41pm we were at called to reports of a strong smell of chemicals from a house on Alpha Grove.

"We finished our work at 2.50pm and left the property in the hands of the police."
