The first case of swine flu has been confirmed at the One Canada Square headquarters of Trinity Mirror.

An unidentified employee of the media group has been diagnosed with the disease after being off work for the last two days.

Staff working in the building were alerted immediately by email and given advice about how to avoid spreading infection.

A spokesman for the company said: " One of our colleagues here at Canary Wharf who has been away from work for two days has just been confirmed as having swine flu.

"We received confirmation today via his doctor. We are not sure when he will be back at work but there is no cause for panic."

The spokesman confirmed Trinity Mirror, which publishes The Mirror, The People and The Wharf, presently has no plans to offer vaccinations against the disease but is keeping its options open.

He said: "Because of the size of the company there are issues about the scale of vaccinations that would be required.

"But we are offering the following advice to people to minimise the spread of the flu virus, or any other virus.

"Cover your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing by using a tissue - not hands - and bin the tissue immediately

"Wash your hands with soap and water immediately."

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, fatigue, coughing and sore throat, muscular aches and headaches.

Anyone feeling unwell is advised to seek medical help by phoning their GP and following their advice.

Further information about swine flu is available at direct.gov.uk/swineflu, nhs.uk or by phoning 0800 1513 513.
