Beagles stars in World Championships team
Christine Ohuruogu is among a number of Newham & Essex Beagles athletes included in the Great Britain team for next month's World Championships.
The World and Olympic 400m champion has been handed the chance to defend her title in Berlin despite recent injury problems.
Ohuruogu is joined in the squad by club-mates Mo Farah, Tyrone Edgar, Chris Tomlinson, Steve Lewis and Gianni Frankis.
Farah will be gunning for glory in the 5,000m, although he faces some stiff opposition from a clutch of Ethiopian and Kenyan runners, while Edgar will have a tall order to make an impression in the 100m, where he will come up against the sport's hottest property, Usain Bolt.
Tomlinson will fancy his medal chances in the long jump after producing an 8.21m leap at Crystal Palace last Friday, where he finished second behind former Olympic champion Dwight Phillips.
He is joined in the field events by pole vaulter Lewis, who won a Commonwealth Games bronze medal three years ago.
And for high hurdler Frankis inclusion in the squad is reward for a solid season where the 21-year-old has set a personal best of 13.57 in the event.
Also travelling to Berlin will be Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets athletes Rikki Fifton and Perri Shakes Drayton.
Fifton is in the 4x100m relay squad while Shakes-Drayton will be looking to impress in the 400m hurdles.
The squad is the first to compete at a major championships since last year's Olympic Games in Beijing and with British anticipation about the London Games now building all eyes will be on the crop of promising youngsters.
Head Coach Charles van Commenee said: "This team has been selected to give us the best possible results at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin. I expect to see athletes demonstrating their ability to perform at the highest level under pressure.
"Of course we are on a long term journey to 2012, but we can't wait three years for the medals and performances, I want to see both in Berlin and then more next year and the year after until we get to London. This is our first staging post on our toughest ever journey."
The World Championships will be held in Berlin between August 15-23.
