Gang violence blamed for Harbinger stabbings

Gang violence has been blamed for a clash which left two Isle of Dogs teens in hospital with stab wounds.

A 17 and 14 year old were taken to separate East London hospitals after a battle involving around 30 youths between Cahir Street and Harbinger Road at around 5.30pm last Friday (May 29).

Police subsequently arrested two boys aged 15 and 14, and issued a call for witnesses to the "gang-related" brawl.

A neighbour said: "We saw a large group of people coming off Spindrift Avenue from Mudchute. They had cut-down scaffolding poles, and there were even girls in the group as well."

The 17 year old was stabbed in the bottom, while the 14 year old sustained a cut to the head. Both have now been discharged. Two local youths were arrested for GBH, and bailed pending further enquiries. Anyone with information shoulf contact DS Cliff Jones or DC Claudia Crisp on 0207 2754546 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

DS Richard Plant of Limehouse's Violent Crime Unit admitted gang attacks were "a continuing problem" for officers, and Millwall councillor Shirley Houghton singled out the Harbinger Massive Crew for damage caused to the locality, specifically the nearby skate park and The Forge, Glenkerrin's new housing development.

She said: "They soon took the skate park over and chased all the other kids away.

"It's completely wrecked. Some of the graffiti is actually very rude. The council just don't know how to handle the problem.

"It's absolutely horrendous. They're completely out of control. They're the same ones that are getting into The Forge.

"The average person around here is sick of them. They carry on the way they do because they know they'll get away with it."

Residents at The Forge have complained gang members are being let into the fire escape stairwells, and are drinking, having sex and scrawling graffiti on walls using pencil and cigarette lighters.

One said: "I came down one night and they're were burning the carpet. A few weeks later, I went out to take out the trash and there were two young people having it off in the bins. It was a big shock.

"When we moved in, it was lovely. The graffiti has now been here for six weeks, and we haven't seen the security guard for about three weeks.

"You're frightened to let your kids go around the corner. It's disgusting."

Glenkerrin claimed the development is now being operated by Assettrust Housing.

Assettrust director Frank Newell confirmed it was seeking permission from police to use CCTV to identify the culprits, and would be holding a meeting for residents to discuss the response to the problem, such as a change in how the fire door operates.

He said: "We're determined to put a stop to it. But there's no single magic wand we can wave because we've got to be careful not to compromise fire safety."

Surely a security guard on patrol would be a "magic wand" that would not compromise fire safety? the kids on the Island have run amok without any intervention from the police or other agencies for what feels like forever. Something must be done.

We are moving into one of the ground floor flats in the forge next week and now I am seriously worried and quite frightened.
I would be keen to hear what has been done about this problem since this article was written.
We have not signed a contract yet an now not sure i want to.

Thank you

Hi. I was hoping to get in touch with the Massive, as they came to my house last week selling girl scout cookies and I accidentally underchanged them.

I didn't think it would matter, but they told me they were saving up for spelling lessons, and I feel guilty now because it looks like they didn't raise enough to finish the course.

The cookies were very nice though. I suspect their mummies helped them.

TEACHING THE VALUES OF PEACE

By: Mike (Ali) Raccoon Eyes Kinney

As a Cherokee Native American Activist and a former member of the Richmond California Violence Prevention Movement, I have seen close to 515 homicides in the City of Richmond from 2001 to the present.

The declaration of a 'war on violence' by the Richmond city government was not the panacea, instead it failed miserably.

I have often stated in town hall meetings and on television, the best way to win the 'war on violence' in Richmond is to 'TEACH THE VALUES OF PEACE'.

In the killing fields of Richmond, most of the victims of homicides are youth or young adults. Teaching the values of peace begins with our youth and young adults. From a Native perspective, winning the war on violence begins in the home with a strong, spiritual belief and value system.

We believe that Creator made all generations, past, present and those of the future, holy people. This is what our Elders teach us from the time we are born.

Our families and Elders teach our young people that they must tear away the images and stereotypes that mainstream society has placed upon them as Native peoples.

Violence and killing is not traditional in Native culture, it is a learned behavior from mainstream society.

We teach our youths not to attack, punish or beat themselves up for crimes that they have never committed in regards to racism. Our Elders and families teach our young people to have good self-esteem, self-worth and self-value, for as the original holy people this was Creators plan.

Native people know that it is both family and community responsibility to teach the values of peace to our young people.

We teach our young people honesty and accountability concerning violence. It begins with accepting responsibility for self and acknowledging any past use of violence.

Admitting any wrongdoing, communicating openly and truthfully to renounce the use of violence in the future places our youth on the right path. We place a heavy emphasis that all life is sacred.

The final lesson in teaching the values of peace is quite simple. It is helping young people understand their relationship to others and all things in Creation.

Be responsible for your role, act with compassion and respect, and remember ALL LIFE IS SACRED. Native culture is prevention!
