Food: The Park Bar, Canada Square Park

While most of Canary Wharf remains obstinately static regardless of the seasons, Canada Square Park goes through more makeovers than Madonna.

The arrival of spring scrapes away the ice rink like yesterday's nail varnish, only for the world's latest magnificent automobiles to drop onto the turf.

The tower people watch grass edge back onto the space like a nervous squirrel. Rain falls, clouds drift, and suddenly the bugle sounds for the arrival of Canary Wharf's own summer standard bearer.

The Park Bar opened for the fourth year running on Friday, with a slightly revised layout, a new Getty picture tent and a focus on "higher-end relaxation at reasonable prices".

While Gorilla Events still offers the familiar draws of Oranjeboom, Asahi, spirits and the all-important Pimms and Lemonade on draught, they're increasingly edging towards the delights of strawberries and cream, cocktails and Champagne.

Gorilla's operations manager Michael Chilton said: "For many people in Canary Wharf, this is a real sign that summer has started. We have regulars that look forward to our arrival."

The venue arrives in town as Canary Wharf's arts and events schedule heats up, offering punters a balmy evening destination and a vantage point to soak up the action on the park stage or on the big screen. Attractions this year include The Royal Opera's La Traviata on June 30, and of course the return of Britain's fleeting fling with tennis.

Michael said: "It's Wimbledon that people really come for.

"We're really pushing the strawberries and cream this year as well as the Pimms and lager, and we're planning to introduce a set cocktail list for certain events.

"The Wimbledon list has cocktails called Strawberries and Cream and a Wimbledon Martini. For the orchestral events, we'll be looking at producing some more traditional cocktails."

This year, healthy fast food chain Leon has stepped in to provide the catering for the bar, with options such as the Grilled Chicken Wrap (£3.95), the Original Superfood Salad (£3.95) and the Valhrona chocolate Better Brownie (£1.80).

While booking out the entire bar for private events is not an option, sections can be roped off for functions, and Leon can veer off from the set menu if asked.

Cocktails such as the Champagne-infused Pimms Royal (£6.50) are present and correct, but the fully-trained bar staff will be able to whip up something special if you're feeling adventurous.

Loyalty cards will also be available throughout the bar's temporary stay, allowing you to enjoy happy hour prices all day. They are available at the bar for regular customers, and those who remember to flash their good manners as much as their gold card.

Since setting up The Park Bar, Gorilla has won over Wharf companies such as KPMG and Credit Suisse, which have hired the company for their private events.

But in the brief wink before summer recedes into the fog, they'll be just outside your office window, taunting you as you wade through paperwork and problems.

Michael said: "We're normally here for about 14 weeks. As long as the weather's nice, we'll be around for as long as we're wanted."
