Food notes: June 18

Wharfers of a certain age will remember the clever marketing campaign of Phileas Fogg crisps from the '80s.
Perhaps the most famous thing to emerge from Consett, the Fogg brand was a supermarket mainstay for years before it disappeared.
Well, now Fogg is back. Cooked in sunflower oil, with no artificial colours and flavours, the manufacturers have sourced ingredients from around the world to evoke those far-flung places. The Wharf sampled a couple of the new flavours to see how they measured up.
The Irish Cheddar with Onion Chutney flavour met with a mixed response. Some felt they could have been a bit cheesier and could be good for dipping, but they did taste satsifyingly fresh.
Mexican Sweet Chilli proved more popular. The spicy flavour was more interesting, with a pleasant tingle of chilli. More complex than the cheese flavour, so perhaps more exciting for our modern palates.
Phileas Fogg crisps are available from Waitrose and Tesco, priced from 58p for a handypack.

» Brera's invitation
Over in Jubilee Place, they huddle around Cafe Brera taking advantage of the free Wi-fi (surely, free Wi-fi is de rigueur in every eating establishment in the laptop metropolis of Canary Wharf).
And now there's more reason than ever to visit the pioneering coffee shop which stuck the flag in Canary Wharf turf in 1991.
Happy hour runs from 6pm-7pm at its three Wharf shops and what could make you happier than a "buy one, get one free" offer.
» Bargain hunt
A treasure trove of coupons, Moneysavingexpert.com this week highlights a couple of bargains for the discerning Wharfer.
Catch the last few days of Pizza Express's two for one deal plus free garlic bread. Meanwhile Cafe Rouge has a two for one offer, La Tasca 50 per cent off and GBK has a £6.95 burger and drink deal.
IN SEASON...
STRAWBERRIES

Think Wimbledon, think cream, think cliches of England... however, come June, the taste of the strawberry matches its sensuous aroma and suddenly all is right with the world. On their own for the puritans, with sugar or cream alongside a glass of bubbly for the hedonists. Dipped in chocolate for those who care not for tomorrow.
