Food notes: Cafe Menu coffee

POWDER POWER: We love our coffee here at The Wharf, but we love our pennies too so we thought we'd dip our crooked pinkie into the weird world of the instant specialist coffee.

Of the many, we opted for Nescafe's Cafe Menu Cappuchino in the hope, rather than expectation, that we could consign those £3 Starbucks specials to the bin.

Good news Starbucks, bad news penny savers. Despite applying Chaos Theory to our stirring and Chocco Topping to the impressive layer of foam, the best description we could muster was - "warm, powdery drink".

If anyone knows of an instant specialist coffee that passes the taste test, let us know.

HELPING HAND: Who's your hero and, more pertinently (to them anyway), what would feed them if they nipped round for that fantasy dinner party you had planned.

If you're Prime Minister Gordon Brown you'd be heating up a nice Chequers Steak Pie for Scottish athlete Eric "Chariots of Fire" Liddell.

Celebs such as Kate Adie, Judi Dench, David Jason and Bruce Forsyth join politicians, chefs, and military folk to put together a cookbook for heroes, with money going towards the Help For Heroes charity.

Compiled by Sqn Lder John Pullen and published by Accent at £14.99. It is available from Amazon.

FRUITY FUN: Forget the dark clouds, Lambrini can see nothing but sunshine and fruity fun.

The brand has launched a jaunty Rose to attract young women and has employed a psychologist to divvy the dolls into three personality types to match Lambrini's fruit twists.

They are: Sassy Chick Cherry, an adventurous, independent leader; Princess Peach, a feminine and girly romantic; and Laid Back Lady Original, the sociable girl of the group.

We looked hard for Downbeat Dourberry, for the girl into solitude, emo and morbid introspection but, we're told, the brand is all about "a celebration of being female, carefree and up for some fun".

Prices range from £2.49 to £2.99. Go to lambrini.co.uk for more feminine frolics.
