Benefit of crisis is review of expenses system
By Tim Archer

First there was disbelief. Then there was anger. Now we need action. I'm talking, of course, about MPs' expenses. The Telegraph blew the whistle on the abuse of this lax system by certain members.
But the real benefit of this exposure is now the whole political system is under review.
After 12 years of Labour, people feel powerless.
More and more decisions have been taken away from families, professionals and communities in favour of a centralised, bureaucratic administration.
I have always believed that the best decisions are made by the people closest to the issues.
This is why I was delighted by David Cameron's announcement that he would instigate a radical reform of politics.
I am committed to a fair and transparent deal for taxpayers which is why if ever I was fortunate enough to be elected to represent electors at Westminster I would publish all my receipts online; would not claim for travel to and from Westminster; would not claim for food and drink; and I would certainly not claim the £10,000 communications allowance that our current MP sees fit to spend on sending glossy calendars to voters and other campaigning type activities.
It is time for politics to re-engage with the public. The only way to restore trust is to hold a general election so voters can remove those MPs who do not deserve the privilege of office.
