A proposal for a 750 apartment development by the Thames Barrier was finally approved by councillors in Newham last night.

Earlier this year the proposal by Barratt East London and Taylor Wimpey was deferred back to council officers due to public opposition to the plans.

However, on Wednesday evening following speeches by concerned residents of the nearby Tradewinds and Barrier Point estates and representation from the developer, councillors at the Development Control Committee in East Ham gave it the thumbs up.

Out of 664 letters sent as part of the consultation, 78 objections were received.

Complaints against the development centred around it taking up space which could be turned into parkland to add on to the adjacent Thames Barrier Park.

However, councillors voted to pass the proposal following reccommendation from council planning officer Stefan Sanctuary.

He said: "The proposed residential density is justified and the development proposes Section 106 contributions to help deliver necessary public transport improvements and would successfully balance demand for housing with a high quality living environment."

The legal agreement between council and developer will see over £5.5million paid to local services.

These include £1.5m to health care and £784,000 on a new bus route and contributions towards the three-car DLR upgrade.

I find it crazy that they are buiding more homes near the London City Airport flight path. People who already have home there live in utter misery.

So why build more homes. London City Airport won planning permission to expand to 120,000 flights per year. That is one flight 1 every 90 seconds.

Will the property developer going to warn potential buyers about the London City Airport future expansion plans?

Newham Council will approve any big developers plans so long as it can make money it.

I'm all for this. More homes means more residents; and ultimately more voters...

With the increase in voters and resident hopefully this will stem the tide of industrialisation in the area.
