Well, Limehouse resident Charlotte Byrne is leaving London behind to trek to the magnetic North Pole next April - and she needs another team-mate to join her.

The 360 mile Polar Challenge across the frozen arctic wastes will see competitors hauling 55kg of supplies on a sled in temperatures as low as -50 degrees centigrade. It will not be a place for the faint-hearted, as Charlotte explained.

She said: "We need a three man team and I have one person on board already. But we need a third quite quickly. They can be a male or a female but it is important they are fit and healthy because this will be tough.

"This is not a stroll in the park, it will be arduous. Anything can happen because the weather is unpredictable, so you will need physical stamina and, perhaps more importantly, mental fortitude because we don't want anyone who will crack.

"It will involve a lot of endurance training as there's the danger you could end up as a tasty snack for a polar bear if you don't have your wits about you."

aa-jun25-northpole220.jpgFor Charlotte, 30, participation in the challenge was a result of a reappraisal of her life after her father died three years ago.

She said: "Basically I had a bit of a mid-life crisis at the age of 28 because it seemed nothing was working out for me. I decided I had to make the most of things so I wrote down a list of 100 things I wanted to do. I've managed to do quite a few of them already but the Polar Challenge is certainly going to be one of the toughest, but I'm really excited about it."

Once selected the new team member will have to help raise the funds needed to get to the Pole, although Charlotte is hopeful sponsors will come on board to help them out.

She said: "The race is a fantastic marketing opportunity for local and multinational businesses alike. It will be televised to 168million homes across the world plus plenty of coverage in newspapers and magazines.

"Basically we racers will be like walking billboards, so what a way to gain brand awareness in our current cold economic climate."

Charlotte is also looking for a suitable charity to raise funds for.

She said: "My dad's life has inspired me to try and significantly improve the quality of people's lives, whether they have one year or 70 years left."
