There were tears at the Boleyn on Saturday - but they certainly were not from the Hammers who ended the season on a high.

Although they had already lost out to Fulham in the race for a Europe League place, Gianfranco Zola's team beat Middlesbrough and sent the north-east team into the Championship.

Ultimately Boro needed to win by five goals to stay up but strikes from Carlton Cole and Junior Stanislas each side of a Gary O'Neil leveller saw West Ham take the points.

Cole opened the scoring with his 12th goal of the season from a Henry Ilunga cross in the first half.

O'Neil equalised for Boro after good work from Tuncay, but Stanislas ended the away side's hopes of survival when his shot slipped through the fingers of goalkeeper Brad Jones and into the net.
