Police have welcomed the conviction of a man who committed a "horrendous" sexual assault on a woman returning from Canary Wharf two years ago.

Alomgir Rouf, 21, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to four years in jail and will be on the sex offenders register for life following his conviction last week.

The victim had been socialising with her friends in the Wharf area on March 9 2007. Rouf spotted her and followed the woman, who was 27 at the time, before luring her into a block of flats and attacking her.

Rouf was identified through DNA evidence and tracked down to the Plymouth area, where he was arrested and charged. He pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced on Monday (April 27) at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Speaking after sentencing, A/DS Ahmed El-Ghonaimy from Tower Hamlets borough Sapphire Unit said: "This was a horrendous crime.

"Rouf committed a stranger rape, where he took advantage of a vulnerable female. His actions left the victim emotionally scared, and she had to endure two years of misery before Rouf was brought to justice.

"Rouf has pleaded guilty which negated the need for the victim to relive the events at court. His sentence means that he will no longer pose a threat to other females."
