Cancer Research UK will be scaling a Canary Wharf tower for what looks like being the last time this weekend.

The 230-foot abseil run by City of London Friends of Cancer Research UK (Crukcity) has taking place each year since 2000.

But this Saturday and Sunday could be the last time fundraisers for the charity take on the 20 Cabot Square building.

Chairman of the abseil committee Richard Dollimore said: "This is the ninth and final time we will be here as it will be given to another charity next year.

"But we are doing various other abseil events and will continue to raise money."

Last year 160 abseilers made the descent raising over £80,000.

This year there will be 180 volunteers taking on the building.

Volunteers do not need abseiling experience as training is provided on the day by qualified instructors.

They do have to pledge to raise more than £200 for Cancer Research in sponsorship.

The annual event was run by Cancer Research head office before being taken over three years ago by the Crukcity team, which was formed in 1989.

Richard said: "Since we've been doing it for the last three years it's always been fully booked.

"And last year we raised £82,000 from it. This year will probably be less due to the credit crunch and people giving less but we still hope to make about £70,000."
