Eastern Jubilee line services were shut down last night as police tried to talk down a woman threatening to hurl herself from a bridge.

British Transport Police stopped trains between North Greenwich and Stratford at around 10pm last night, as officers attempted to persuade the teenager not to throw herself onto the track.

The BTP were alterted to the incident at 9.46pm last night, after the woman was spotted on the Greenway bridge over Jubilee line tracks near West Ham station.

Police attended alongside Metropolitan Police officers and crew from the London Fire Brigade. Trains were suspended as a precaution, and passengers were encouraged to use alternative bus services.

A spokesman for BTP confirmed that the young woman, who lived in the West Ham area, was talked down by a negotiator, detained under the Mental Health Act and taken to Newham General Hospital at 12.40am.

The line was not re-opened until the incident was over.
